Research summary
This study will use a non-invasive monitoring method (called TCM) for arterial blood gasses and will compare this with the standard method of measurement which involves taking a sample of blood from an artery and measuring the blood gasses in an analysis machine. There are currently only small studies of this method in acute care, with conflicting results. Avoidance of arterial blood sampling would prevent pain and complications, however a larger study is needed to define the potential place of this new method in patient care.
