  Samples of breast tissue have been collected from approximately 2000 patients participating in a multinational, randomised control trial of adjuvant hormone therapy for postmenopausal women with early breast cancer (ATAC, now known as LATTE trial). According to the terms of their consent, the patients in the ATAC (LATTE) trial have gifted their tissue for use in research studies.
  We seek authorisation to maintain this collection as a tissue bank, as defined by the Human Tissue Act, and investigate proteins and genetic markers identified by current research as potentially having an important role in the aetiology of breast cancer.
  The tissue is stored as cores within tissue microarrays and in paraffin blocks in the Ralph Lauren Centre for Breast Cancer Research at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, Fulham Road, London.
  Laboratory test data will be securely held in the Ralph Lauren Centre for Breast Cancer Research, identified only by trial number. It will then be sent to the ATAC(LATTE) trial statistician for linkage with the clinical outcomes database. This database is maintained and stored at the Cancer Research UK Centre for Epidemiology, Wolfson Institute of Preventative Medicine, Queen Mary's School of Medicine and Dentistry, London.

• Research programme

  The TransATAC study (REC 97/1/037) was undertaken to investigate the differential benefit for patients of one breast cancer treatment (anastrozole) over another (Tamoxifen) in patients participating in the ATAC(LATTE) trial (Trial no 1033IL/0029). There have been many publications relating to this sample set, and it is well-known in the scientific community. The tissue bank is a valuable resource for the investigation of biomarkers and will allow genetic analyses that may reveal differences in cancer cells that might impact on the response of a patient to treatment and on outcome. The TransATAC Steering Committee will review and approve all research projects associated with these tissue samples to be undertaken at the Royal Marsden and by external collaborators. Approval for projects will be based on the merit of the application only. Approved projects will have confirmed research proposals guiding the policy of the technical work, transfer of any tissue and/or data and statistical analysis of the data. The research will likely be both basic and translational; for example, it will apply molecular biology techniques to investigate the effects of differences in RNA, DNA, and proteins on response to, or side effects from, endocrine therapy in breast cancer patients.
