  • Research summary

This is a questionnaire based investigation of a new method of selecting teeth for dentures. The new intervention uses Augmented Reality to provide an image of the patient with the various alternative teeth in position.
The selection of teeth for dentures is difficult. The main problem is that patients find it difficult to imagine how a particular shape or 'mould' of tooth will look in their mouth. They are currently shown a number of different shaped teeth on a stand and asked to express their preference.
This research team has developed computer software which now offers an alternative way to assist patients in the selection of the different shaped teeth. The new method uses 'Augmented Reality' to show the patient a live image of themselves with a selection of teeth in position in the picture. Effectively the patient takes a live video 'selfie' and the image on the screen shows the chosen teeth in their smile. We want to know if this new method of selection improves the process of tooth selection.
This aim of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of the technology. This will be undertaken using 5 questionnaires to be completed by the 'end-users of the technology, namely the patients themselves, the clinicians and dental technicians.
Patients undergoing denture replacement within Leeds Dental Institute and the School of Dentistry at Leeds will be eligible for consideration for inclusion in the study (see section A17 for the full inclusion and exclusion criteria). The study will be carried out over a 9 month period, each participant will be given a simple questionnaire to complete on separate 2 occasions. The research will take place at a routine clinical visit of denture replacement; no additional visits will be required by the participants. The research interventions and questionnaires will last up to 30 minutes on two visits.
