Research summary
Patient education material has changed very little despite advances in technology and communication. We propose that better tools could be developed to help people who have spinal surgery recover, physically and psychologically, as quickly as possible. Before we do this however we need to understand the following:
• What kinds of information and help they would find useful?
• How we can best present this in a way that motivates them to take an active part in their own recovery?
• How we can use modern digital technology engage patients in their preparation for and recovery from surgery. In this study we aim to identify the information and support tools required by patients before, during and following spinal surgery using a series of loosely structured interviews with patients undergoing lumbar spine surgery.
