Research summary
PAU Education received European Commission funding for an educational campaign designed to improve healthy eating in pregnant and breastfeeding women. Manchester is one of the cities chosen to deliver and evaluate the campaign. The campaign will be delivered at a public health level in Manchester starting in November 2015 and lasting for 6 months. It is anticipated that this will be delivered via an educational stand in several community locations and online. A local stakeholders group will be set up to help deliver this educational campaign. Local partners with a working interest in the campaign's objectives and target participants include Public Health North East and community centre managers.
The study will firstly assess current levels of specific health related behaviours, attitudes and intentions, thought to contribute to the risk of poor nutrition and being overweight or obese (cooking fresh healthy meals; fruit and vegetable intake; consuming a healthy diet, drinking water and physical activity) amongst two target groups of the Manchester population, namely pregnant and lactating women women that live in or close to Manchester prior to the campaign. Our target group includes women living in deprived areas, having low socioeconomic backgrounds and/or education, performing low-skilled labour or simply unemployed and/or belonging to minority ethnic groups.
In a second stage, an evaluation of the education campaign will be conducted via post-test design. In addition to the first survey, the target group will be surveyed again directly after (post-test) the campaign. The difference (change, increase) in the target group’s awareness, knowledge, attitude, intention and behaviour between the baseline and post-measurement will be used to evaluate the project and validate its impact on the targeted population.
In both stages, self-report questionnaires will be used.
