Research summary
The possible under-diagnosis and treatment of dementia in vulnerable minority ethnic groups calls for action but general screening programs are not recommended, mainly since no curative treatments are available. A timely diagnosis is, however, still warranted to help people with dementia and their families to understand the condition, plan for the future and access timely treatment and support. It is therefore important to ensure that people from all ethnic groups have access to timely diagnosis of dementia. To do this requires cognitive tests that are culturally appropriate and can accurately differentiate people who have cognitive impairment from those who do not regardless of their ethnic or educational background. This study seeks to test a newly developed cognitive test, the Brief Assessment of Cognition (BASIC) and compare its performance to well established cross-cultural cognitive tests in a sample of memory clinic patients. This will help establish which cognitive tests are the best across diverse ethnic groups to pick up cognitive impairment. This will be of benefit to patients by improving accuracy of identifying cognitive problems and will provide new evidence for researchers and clinicians to help choose which cognitive tests to use in practice.
