Research summary
Delirium is a common disorder, described as confusion of sudden onset, that fluctuates, and is often accompanied by other distressing symptoms such as hallucinations. It has many causes and is more common in people with dementia. Delirium is a serious condition that has been associated with increased mortality. People with dementia are more at risk of developing delirium.
Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust have developed a system to support people with dementia to stay independent in their homes. This system is called ‘TIHM’ (Technology Integrated Healthcare Management), it is currently being successfully used as part of a monitoring service in Surrey, which aims to support people at home, facilitate access to care and prevent hospital admissions. We would like to explore how well this service works in providing support to people with dementia who also have delirium, who are being discharged from hospital.
People with dementia currently experiencing delirium at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals, who are well enough to go home with support and have a potential study partner who lives with them will be eligible for this study. Equipment will be set up at home and connected with the monitoring service. The study will last for six weeks. We will complete a brief test at the start which asks questions to detect presence of delirium. We will repeat this at three weeks and at the end of the study. At the end of the study, we will complete a questionnaire looking at use of health and social care services during the study period and conduct an interview with the person with dementia and their study partner about their experiences. We will also conduct focus groups with the staff working in the TIHM monitoring service and local stakeholders to explore how well the service has worked.
