Research summary
This project will use a 24-hour dietary recall (intake24) to understand the diet of children who attend the child dental health clinic in the dental hospital at Newcastle University. In line with current teaching practice, the basic analysis of the dietary assessment will be relayed to child patients and their parents, by dental students immediately so modifications can be made to the patients' diet to improve their oral health. From this activity, a database of outcomes will be created so relationships between dental/oral health can be assessed over time to direct policy and general patient education.
Interviews will be conducted with parents and guardians of the child patients to assess if the mode and content of dietary recommendations are acceptable. This outcome will be used to tailor dietary advice in the clinic.
