Research summary
Total hip replacements have become one of the common life changing surgery in UK. Hip replacements involve using a plastic shell. As the years run by, the shell wears off, generating micro plastic particles which causes loosening of the prosthesis requiring a revision procedure. Newer and stronger shells had been manufactured based on in vitro experimental studies. These had been used past 10 years. Thinnest of them measures 3.8mm. It is not known whether this shell is actually better in a clinical setting or whether has a higher failure rate. the study compares the survivorship of this shell at mid to short term compared to the national data published in national joint registry 2015. The national data does not break down outcomes by individual shells and size of implants. there is no individual data published to our knowledge to compare for like to like.
