  • Research summary

The study will focus on the therapeutic relationship within psychological therapies for people diagnosed with schizophrenia. Within the National Health Service (NHS) in Highland only 1 in 5 people with schizophrenia/ schizoaffective disorder were referred for psychotherapy and less than 1 in 50 received the recommended amount (McNamara, Lawes & Leaman, 2013). Considering the significant distress that people diagnosed with schizophrenia experience (Walsh, Hochbrueckner, Corcoran, & Spence, 2016; Watson, 2015), it seems unjust that they are generally denied access to psychological therapy, despite the evidence base (NHS Education for Scotland, 2015). Various academics, authors and practitioners have advocated that psychological therapies offered to people with schizophrenia should value the therapeutic relationship. It is therefore an important topic to cover.

The study will involve interviewing participants on one occasion, using an interview guide. All participants will be assessed for capacity and will be identified by a Consultant Psychiatrist as being safe to participate.
