Research summary
Patient participation in their own care can be concieved as work. The central research objective is to explore, identify and understand the work patients undertake from their admission to and discharge from the Emergency Department. We will describe the different types of work that patients do as their journey progresses and identify potential opportunities or targets for intervention(s) that could utilise patients to contribute to their own care and improve their healthcare experiences. We will use a qualitative approach (of interview and observation of patients) to develop a taxonomy, model and theory of how the patients work which will inform how to engage patients in their own care during their time in the department
