Research summary
Weight gain and difficulty maintaining a physically active lifestyle are real problems for new kidney transplant recipients. Despite this, routine access to physiotherapy and dietitian input is not available for these patients. Obesity is a real issue for kidney transplant patients with an estimate of two thirds of the population being overweight or obese. Research shows that patients, who gain more than 15% of their initial weight within the first year of transplantation, will have a higher chance of dying from conditions not associated with their kidney function within 10 years. The ExeRTiOn study consists of two components. The first component (ExeRTion 1) involves creation of the online weight management resource, to be named "Weigh it up" through PPI and health care professional input. The second component (ExeRTion 2) involves a feasibility randomised-controlled trial to evaluate the acceptability of this resource (Weigh it up) for new kidney transplant recipients with a mixed methods design over a 12 month period.
