Research summary
Use of the Pulse Oximeter in Limb Salvage
The purpose of this study is establish if the use of the pulse oximeter waveform can accurately diagnose reduced blood flow in the lower limb.
After injuries, lack of blood flow to lower limb muscle, leads to death of the muscle with loss of function, chronic pain, limb deformity with a high chance of amputation. Accurate and quick diagnosis with the pulse oximeter may help to avoid these problems. The pulse oximeter is a small clip, which fits over the finger or toe and measures the oxygen saturation as a measure of blood circulation.
This study is designed to check if the pulse oximeter can detect reduced blood supply in a limb following application of a tourniquet in healthy volunteers at UHCW. After checking of blood pressure, participants will have a tourniquet applied to one leg and then one arm. The pulse oximeter will be used to measure how the oxygen saturation is affected by inflation and deflation of the tourniquet over 3 minutes.REC name
