  • Research summary

This study will investigate the effects of using a simulated observation monitor (SOM) in medical simulation, and its effect on student’s perceived realism and engagement with the simulation. We aim to demonstrate an increased perceived realism and engagement in medical students during medical simulation when using simulated observations. We will recruit medical students who will be randomised either to participate in a simulation with the simulated observations monitor, or a simulation without the simulated observations monitor (all observations and changes delivered verbally by the facilitator). Students will then cross over to perform another similar simulation, but with or without the simulated observations monitor (the reverse of the first session). All students will be asked to wear an Empatica wearable smartwatch device, which will record digital biomarker data from the students whilst performing the simulation. Qualitative data will be collected by anonymous online survey and student focus group.
