  • Data collection arrangements

This study will utilise routine national data that will be linked to create a novel and comprehensive clinical databset within the NHS safe haven. The database will be developed utilising data from National ICU records (SICSAG Wardwatcher), Cancer registry (SMR06), SACT prescribing data (Chemocare®), Hospitalisation (SMR01) and General Registrar for Scotland death records (GRO(S)).

  • Research programme

This study will describe use of SACT in cancer patients that have survived a period of critical illness and ICU support and whether any changes in treatment result in differences in patient survival. This will demonstrate how critical illness impacts upon cancer patients’ general health and suitability for optimal treatment. In addition, we will also determine the risks of critical illness among cancer patients who have received SACT and identify any features that are associated with increased risk of ICU admission. Such information will help guide preventative interventions, including increased monitoring of patients who are at risk of critical illness. By recognising critical illness at an early stage, organ dysfunction can be minimised and outcomes improved.
