  • Research summary

The study aims to evaluate implementation of a sleep medicine review template in the routine care of people using CPAP for OSAHS using mixed methods research. The template builds on guideline recommendations and has been developed with the advice of an international panel of sleep apnoea experts.

This is a novel approach; no previous studies have been published globally regarding the use of a structured sleep medicine review template.

We are inviting sleep medicine clinicians in 3 diverse NHS Scotland Sleep medicine services ( Urban - NHS Lothian, Remote and Rural NHS Tayside and rural -NHS Highland)to use the template in their clinical practice of CPAP therapy users for a 2 month period. We will collect anonymised copies of the completed template so that we can find out how they work in practice.

We will also recruit participants to an initial audio recorded group discussion at the first site visit and an individual audio recorded semi structured interview at the final site visit.

To inform more generally the impact of using a template in consultations, we will explore perceptions of the impact on the dynamics of the consultation and specifically potential disadvantages to patient centeredness and benefits to completeness of review.
