Research summary
There is little research about post-traumatic stress disorder in adults with IDD and/or Autism yet it could be argued that individuals with such a diagnosis of are more susceptible to varying degrees of abuse, given their vulnerability, which in turn calls for heightened awareness about PTSD symptoms and their impact on those individuals. The effects of a traumatic experience can impact upon relationships, the ability to sustain employment, health and physical well being, so an accurate diagnosis of PTSD could assist individuals to receive appropriate support and engage in these quality of life domains. PTSD symptoms can also produce significant changes in behaviour and may lead to aggression. The aims of this research project are to conduct a quantitative study using the Impact of Event Scale –Intellectual Disabilities (IES-IDs) to measure the traumatic experiences and possible symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder in men living in secure hospitals, who have a diagnosis of intellectual disability and/or autism.
