  • Research summary

This project will investigate the important psychological and transitional issues that are raised at the time when an individual or a partner of an individual living with a spinal cord injury (SCI) leaves a specialist spinal centre to go back home. Limited research shows that this is an important time for people’s emotional well-being, relationships and adjustment to their injury. This research project will aim to better understand the experiences of people who make this transition within a few years of the transition taking place. It is hoped that this will help services and clinicians to be better informed on how to meet people’s needs and support them during this time. The project will aim to recruit approximately 12 participants, split into two groups. Six participants whom have a spinal cord injury and six of whom are the partner of someone with a spinal cord injury. To be eligible, they will have had to be over 18 years of age at the time of injury, have transitioned back home in the previous five years, be in long-term stable accommodation and have been in a relationship with their significant other since before their spinal injury. Participants will be recruited from the National Spinal Injuries Centre or via an advertisement on a charity website. They will be required to attend one research appointment involving an interview about how they experienced leaving the specialist spinal centre and a short questionnaire about theirs, or their partner’s injury. The research appointment, lasting approximately 60-90 minutes will be offered face-to-face at the National Spinal Injuries Centre, at their home, or via Skype depending on participant location and preference. Participants will be reimbursed £10 for their time and their participation in the study will then be complete.
