Research summary
Unfortunately around 1% of total joint replacements develop a deep infection, which is a catastrophic complication from the patient’s point of view. In the early days of joint replacement much attention was given to this problem and the use of ultraclean air operating theatres was developed. Recent work has, however, shown that in contemporary practice the true deep infection rate is probably still between 1-2%.
For the purpose of this study we plan to recruit a series of consecutive patients presenting to the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital for revision of infected joint replacements. Using a preliminary questionnaire and an interview, the true cost to the patient of the complication and its treatment will be determined and how this cost differs between the two surgical approaches of one or two step revisions.
The health economic data from this small sample, in conjunction with national prevalence data available from the National Join Registry, will provide an indication of the scale of the cost to the national health economy of these procedures for revision joint replacement following infection.
