Research summary
This is a feasibility study for a larger research programme using novel MRI capabilities to find early evidence of cardiovascular and metabolic disease in adolescent and young adults who are either obese or unhealthy lifestyles. Obesity and related diseased such as metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, to name a few, are affecting younger and younger populations of people. We need to review how these diseases develop in a younger population, and develop a measure to assess metabolic health and risk of developing cardiovascular and metabolic complications. We will recruit adolescents and young adults who are otherwise healthy and group them according to obesity and physical activity status.
Through blood tests, questionnaires, physical activity monitors and state of the art cardiovascular and liver MRI techniques, we are investigating how lifestyle factors affect underlying cardiovascular and metabolic health. Each participant will come for 2 visits: the first at the clinical sciences building at Aintree hospital, and the second at the Liverpool MRI centre (LMRIC) at the University of Liverpool. Participants will have blood tests, and a cardiovascular fitness test on the first visit, they will then be asked to where the physical activity monitor for 5 days. Finally they will return and have an MRI of their heart and liver. Overall the study will entail 2 visits (2 hours and 4 hours respectively) and 5 days at home wearing the physical activity monitor.REC name
