Research summary
Asthma is a common long-term condition. There are 5.4 million patients receiving treatment in the NHS. Asthma causes cough, wheeze and breathing difficulty. Poor management causes uncontrolled symptoms and severe attacks which may be life threatening. Patient education and self-management are key to good outcomes. We and
others have shown that the risk of asthma is very high amongst British South Asians (SAs) and health outcomes are poor compared to British White patients. SA patients require frequent steroid treatment and suffer more asthma attacks. Various reasons including deprivation, environment, lower health literacy and beliefs, lack of engagement with the NHS and cultural and religious factors, have been linked to poor asthma outcomes. The aim of this study is to explore the views and experiences of SA patients and healthcare staff about asthma and then make recommendations for improving care. The first part of our study will involve interviews with approximately 30 British
SA adults that have been diagnosed with asthma. These will include patients attending hospital, GP surgeries and from the community. We will also interview
approximately 30 doctors, nurses and physiotherapists delivering asthma care in hospitals and in the community. Patient and healthcare staff interviews will explore views, opinions and concerns about asthma management. We will analyse this
information and then develop supportive measures or tools that suit SA patients to help improve asthma management. We will then seek feedback from SA patients and healthcare staff through focus groups before producing a final supportive tool package.REC name
