  • Research summary

A scoping exercise (Phase 1 - completed) collating parental feedback has demonstrated there could be substantial impact on both parents and staff from improving communication practices.

Despite knowing that a period of neonatal resuscitation has significant psychological impact on families, there is a lack of clarity regarding who should provide this vital role and there is no consensus on best practice for high quality communication during this time. No published evidence is available concerning interactions between healthcare staff and mothers during this challenging period in theatre
Guidance cannot be formulated for such challenging circumstances without learning what mothers, fathers and birthing partners want from their anaesthetic team during this time, and by investigating the lived experiences alongside the challenges and barriers met by anaesthetic healthcare professionals.

The SuPPORT Project Anaesthetic staff questionnaire (phase 2) will use open and closed questions to explore past clinical experiences and current practices in communication between anaesthetic staff and parents during neonatal resuscitation. The study population will be limited to those working in NHS Wales.

Appropriate staff members will be identified by Local Collaborators at Participant Identification Centres and approached by email inviting them to complete a short survey.

We will employ a mixed methods study design, combining both quantitative and qualitative research approaches, in order to fully explore our research question, maximise the insights and understanding gained and strengthen our study conclusions.

Phase 3 - the data collated from the above phases will aid the development of "principles of care" by a multidisciplinary team.

Phase 4: Parental review of developed principles
Review of ‘Principles of Care’ guidance by lay-person panel representatives (parents with prior experience of neonatal resuscitation) from the Welsh Maternity and Neonatal Network.
Parental feedback (digital closed and open question feedback form, disseminated via social media avenues, not NHS) on developed ‘Principles of Care’ guidance to ensure acceptability to service-users.
