  • Research summary

Fathers play a pivotal role in the upbringing and development of their children. \nHowever, at times fathers experience difficulties with adapting to their role and can feel separated from their child. There is currently little research investigating how fathers can be supported in the influential period after having a baby. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to understand further the individual support needs of first time fathers within the first six weeks postnatally. This study will hope to uncover a better understanding of how to support fathers and inform professional knowledge of this, \nThe study is Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, recruiting six to ten first time fathers via convenience sampling. Participants will be considered as long as they are first time fathers aged 20 or over, speak fluent English (due to constraints with resources for a translator) and have had a baby who has not received any extra medical intervention at birth. Consenting participants will take part in a one to one semi-structured interview in the participant’s home, lasting approximately 30 minutes. Interviews will be audio recorded and field notes taken. No further follow ups will be anticipated.
