Research summary
Human papillomavirus (HPV) related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) has been shown to be associated with improved survival. Single modality surgical treatment is currently advocated for stage 1 and 2 OPSCC. Increasingly, focus is shifting to the de-intensification of treatment in HPV related OPSCCs. However, no trials are currently randomising a wider gamut of patients to single modality surgical treatment for these cancers. Observational studies of real world management, including those who stray from currently recommended treatment regimes, may therefore give insight into additional patients who may be suitable for surgery alone to manage their disease.
This study is a retrospective observational cohort study based in international centres performing transoral robotic surgery for primary OPSCC without any adjuvant therapy in the form of radiotherapy, chemotherapy or immunotherapy. It aims to report local recurrence-free survival in this cohort and investigate the impact of surgical resection margins, including exploring optimal cut-off thresholds for disease control.
