• Data collection arrangements

  Surplus tissue, fluids and swabs that are taken as part of routine/standard of care diagnosis and treatment. Only material that is excess to that required for routine healthcare will be used. This may include tissue from surgical operations or medical investigations, blood and other bodily fluids, samples taken to investigate potential infections.

  Only samples that are taken as part of routine care are involved. No additional samples will be taken.

  Effectively, this means that material that would otherwise be disposed of may be used to improve medical knowledge.

  If used for research, these will only be used in an anonymised manner. Consent for this will not be sought. However, samples will not be used from patients who have stated that they do not wish for their material to be used for research.

  This will be stored using HTA licence #12427. This is a post mortem licence with facility for research. The tissue will be stored at Departments in the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and Northern General Hospital, both being Hospitals of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHSFT.

  In addition, some archival material is stored off site by CellNass (HTA licence #12434) through a contract with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. Protocols for transfer to and retrieval from this facility are covered in our protocols.
