Research summary
Previous phases of the SCIOaS Study (Establishing Supportive Care needs of frail elders and developing an Intervention to address these in Older adult acute Settings) have reached a consensus regarding the key elements of Supportive Care for Frail Elders (Phase One) and clarified current care practices and the facilitators and barriers to giving Supportive Care (Phase Two). Phase Three built upon this work and focused on the importance of lay carers/ family and friends in partnering with staff to facilitate SC in acute settings. An educational intervention – the V.I.P. - Very Important People - Bundle has been co-designed with lay carers and staff. The aim of the intervention is to help nurses recognise, value and partner with lay carers (to the extent that is wanted) in a systematic way across the hospital stay.
Phase Four( This application)_ rolls out the intervention on one site and used different research methods to see if the resource is useful in helping staff and lay carers partner together. Working with the clinical staff we will use observation, reflective meetings and interviews to see how the intervention is being used in practice and what the organization can do to support the new way of working. Interviews with patients and lay carers who have been on the ward at the time of the roll out will help us to understand if the intervention is perceived as helpful. We will also use a survey with lay carers and interview some carers about their perceptions of important issues to consider in working with clinical staff- especially around the transition from hospital to home. These outcomes will help us to understand how we might measure the training.REC name
