  • Research summary

All patients should receive good advice from their neurologists informing them about whether or not they should be permitted to continue driving after the diagnosis of a neurological disorder. This study has the goal of improving the process in which this information is given to neurological patients in the outpatient department in the University Hospital of Wales (UHW).

Questionnaires will be given to at least fifty patients after routine consultations with neurology consultants to discover the quantity and standard of information currently received. These responses will be checked against patient notes in order to obtain reliable data. Questionnaires will also be given to neurologists to find out the degree of knowledge they hold about the current DVLA driving regulations.

The results of these questionnaires will help to shape teaching modules to be given to neurologists, with the intention of improving the process by which patients receive information concerning whether it is all right for them to drive.

The original questionnaires will then be given to a new group of at least fifty patients, and to the original group of neurology consultants. This will assess any change in knowledge about driving in medical staff and any change in information given to patients.

The study will be repeated until a large enough improvement in patient information has occurred, over a maximum time-span of 36 months.
