  • Research summary

The research question being addressed are:\n\nHow does an admission occur between a patient and a registered nurse in a hospice?\n\nWhat is the role and contribution of the registered nurse during the admission of a patient to a hospice?\n\nThe admission process is a recurring feature of nursing work that involves undertaking an initial assessment, building a rapport with the patient, alleviating their concerns and orientating the patient to the environment. A fundamental part of this process is when the registered nurse meets with the patient to have a face-to-face discussion to gather and share information. In clinical practice, nurses often refer to this event as ’doing an admission’.\n\nA literature review has shown that few studies have examined the role of the registered nurse during the admission of a patient. And yet, admission is an important event for patients and a regular part of nurses’ work. The aims of the study are to identify and examine the key features of admission by observing the event and gathering the views of those who participate. Participants will include patients, registered nurses, relatives/carers (if present) and other healthcare professionals (if present).\n\nThe study will take place within the in-patient area of a hospice in Scotland. The data collection phase is expected to take between 6 to 9 months.\nThe methods used to collect data will include:\n1 Observing and audio recording the admission event\n2 Audio-recording individual interviews with each of the participants\n3 Examining the patient’s records\nThe findings from the study may be used to guide further studies and help to inform recommendations for nursing practice regarding patient admission.
