Research summary
Telecare devices (e.g. community alarms and automated sensors) are widely used to support people with a range of long-term conditions, but there is limited evidence from routine data (i.e. large scale non-experimental data) regarding the impact they have on service use outcomes, such as emergency, non-elective hospital admissions and entry to care homes. This project is part of a PhD project(funded by the Scottish Government) that aims to investigate, using linked administrative health and social care data, whether receipt of telecare influences service outcomes (e.g. entry to care homes and hospital admissions etc.). Further, where possible, it will assess whether different devices have larger effects on service use outcomes, and whether changes in service use outcomes are larger amongst particular population groups.
