Research summary
We will recruit 100-120 individuals who currently attend chest clinics across NHS Fife. They will be identified by their doctor/nurse who looks after their asthma. This will be done through speaking to them during their usual appointment and through checking their medical file. \n\nParticipants who are interested in taking part in the study, will be given a study pack. In the study pack they will be asked to go through an information sheet and carefully read the information included. They will be advised that they can get in touch with the researcher using her contact details if they wish to ask any questions about the study. They will be then asked to read through a consent form to make sure that they understand what the study involves and agree to take part. No written consent will be needed, and participants will be made aware that by returning questionnaires they agree to take part. After this, we will ask participants for some basic information about their asthma. They will then be asked to complete 6 short questionnaires about their anxiety, mood, asthma related quality of life, the way they manage emotions, how confident they feel about managing asthma and questions about their current asthma management. They will only need to fill these once. This should take about 20 minutes. \nParticipants can complete the study pack in the hospital and hand it to the reception staff - or take it home and send it back using the pre-paid envelope. This will give participants as much time as they feel they need to think about taking part in the study, ask questions and choose a suitable time to take part. \n\nWe hope our study will give a better understanding of what psychological factors influence asthma outcomes and help to develop better asthma treatments.
