  • Research summary

    Why?
The aim of this study is to gain an understanding of acceptance and how it works with psychological factors in End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) to inform the development of acceptance-based interventions and technologies for patients receiving dialysis.

    What?
This study will collect information about acceptance and associated factors in dialysis patients. Linking this to clinical information it will provide an insight into the role acceptance has to play and how this works over a period of 12 months.

    Who?
ESRD patients at who have been on dialysis for at least 3 months.

    How?
The research proposed will involve a mix methods approach with patients across dialysis types. The study will involve patients being interviewed twice, at the start of the study and again 12 months later. Patients will also have the option to complete questionnaires at these time points, an additional 6 month questionnaire will also be included. These will record psychological and self-report measures (quality of life, depression, anxiety, coping, acceptance). Clinical data will be collected at the same time from routinely collected laboratory and dialysis measures. Current evidence suggests that acceptance in illness can improve the physical and mental state of patients but there is limited evidence in patients with ESRD. There is the potential that the findings of this research may inform the development of interventions which work with acceptance processes.
