Research summary
Infants with permanent hearing loss at birth are at higher risk of delayed speech and language development, poor socio-emotional development and lower academic attainment without appropriate intervention. Due to the UK NHSP, hearing losses are identified early and intervention can begin in the first weeks of life. Optimal usage time of hearing aids is around 10 hours per day, however datalogging (an option on hearing aid software to view the average time use per day) from many infants aged 0-3 with hearing aids show inconsistent usage.
This study will investigate use time across different sites, patterns in usage over time and if there are any characteristics that can predict hearing aid usage. The study is the first step to performing further research into habilitation interventions for infants to increase hearing aid usage and developmental outcomes.REC name
