Research summary
The REPP study (Retrospective Exploration of Patient Perceptions) is a single centre, qualitative study, designed to build on a previous pilot study called The EDICT study run by Royal Bournemouth Hospital. The REPP study uses semi-structured interviews to assess whether the exercise aspect of The EDICT study had an impact on the patients quality of life.
The EDICT study recruited patients with colorectal cancer and provided an individually tailored 2-week high intensity exercise program before surgery. This study showed the majority of patients had an increase in fitness, a desirable outcome before surgery, however it did not assess any changes to the patients quality of life.
The REPP study will use semi-structured interviews to retrospectively assess whether the patient felt any improvement in quality of life as a result of the exercise. The interviews are audio recorded and transcribed before being analysed to identify common themes. The study is part of an academic award and will only run for a short period of time with all participants recruited from The EDICT study cohort. Due to the short recruitment period and limited cohort of patients, target recruitment is 3 patients with potential to over recruit.
This study has the potential to show that exercising in the small window between diagnosis and surgery can have a positive impact on not only physiological outcomes, but on psychological outcomes as well. If a positive impact is shown, this may add to the evidence base, encouraging clinicians to emphasise exercise as part of a colorectal cancer patients treatment.REC name
