Research summary
A previous study carried out by a previous doctorate of clinical psychology trainee(Currey, Holt and Waller) found that psychological and social factors did not predict weight loss (in a lifestyle weight management programme), but weight loss was associated with positive subsequent changes in psychological and social characteristics. The present study aims to replicate and extend that finding. It will investigate the relationship of personality and psychosocial factors (mental health, quality of life, physical disablement and commitment to managing own healthcare)with weight loss among people enrolled on a NHS weight management programme. A longitudinal design will be used. Questionnaires measuring psychosocial factors will be administered before the intervention and after three months, and weight will be measured at regular intervals. The resulting data will be analysed using a combination of comparative and associative statistical tests.
