Research summary
This study aims to look for an association between levels of iron in the blood and wound fluid of patients with venous leg ulcers, and whether their ulcers heal as quickly as expected if the iron levels are high or low. This information will then help us learn more about what conditions are best for ulcers to heal. This is a small pilot study with a target of 50 patients who will be recruited from Outpatient Wound Clinics at Cardiff & Vale and Aneurin Bevan University Health Boards. Participation is the study will last for 4 weeks with 2 research appointments being undertaken in the Outpatient clinic.
Recruited patients will have blood tests taken to look at their blood counts and iron levels and a sample of wound fluid taken from the ulcer to measure iron levels for comparison. The patients will be reviewed for a second and final time 4 weeks after the first to measure how much the ulcer has healed.
