  • Research summary

This study aims to describe in detail the long term journey towards recovery of a group of patients that were detained in a high security hospital between 1992-3 and if health services are providing such patients with optimal services and resources to promote recovery in the long term.

During 1992/93 a group of 241 patients were interviewed and had their case notes reviewed as part of a survey of the whole patient population at the State Hospital. 169 of those patients who had a diagnosis of schizophrenia were then contacted for follow up interview and case note review during 2000/01. This new study intends to follow up all 241 patients who participated in the State Hospital Survey and will seek consent for semi structured interview and case note review.

Where the participant interview will take place depends on where the previous participants are located. Some will still live within secure care or other mental health services while others will live in the community and attend outpatient appointments. Some patients may only be in contact with community mental health teams and a small number may not be engaged with any services at all in which case we may need to ask their GP's to pass on letters inviting participation. Patients will be interviewed at a relevant local health care site and will be asked to complete only one, 45 minute to 1 hour long interview over the life of the 2 year study.
