Research summary
It is common for people who experience severe mental health difficulties to also have problems with alcohol and/or drug use, increasing barriers to accessing care. Our aim is to look at a range of sources of evidence to identity models of care that work well for individuals with co-occuring severe mental health issues and alcohol/drug misuse (COSMHAD) and share these models with people who commission and provide services. We will use evidence from three activities (work packages, WP) to achieve this:
WP1 - A review of published evaluations of service models
WP2 - Mapping of national UK specific services and service audit survey of approximately 20 services identified in the mapping
WP3 - In depth focus groups/stakeholder consultation (WP3a) and individual interviews (WP3b) with a range of stakeholders including service users, carers, commissioners, and mental health and substance use staff. Focus groups will be carried out in 6 key areas of the UK and we will focus on how local services work, including what aspects seem to work really well and what aspects not so well. Interviews will be conducted with approximately 10-15 people living with COSMHAD.
We will use all that we learn to generate a set of recommendations for COSMHAD treatment about what works (and doesn't), for whom, and in what circumstances, in order to help improve care for this group.
