Data collection arrangements
The RareCan bioresource consists of samples collected from patients diagnosed with rarer forms of cancer. Rare cancers include any one of the approximately 200 types which occur in fewer than 6 in 100,000 people per year and rare subtypes of more common cancers- such as those affecting the breast, bowel, prostate or lung. Samples include pieces of the tumour itself and small volumes of normal blood from the same donor.
After reading the information we provide and after an opportunity to have any questions they may have answered, patients can give their consent for samples to be collected by the RareCan bioresource either by signing a consent form available on our website (www.rarecan.com) or at their hospital at the time of treatment (if their hospital is one of our collection centres) Samples are stored in locked rooms at the Newcastle University Central Biobank Facility and can only be accessed once applications for their use has been approved by an independent Access Committee.
Research programme
The aim of the RareCan bioresource is to speed up research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of patients with rarer forms of cancer. We aim to keep the number of samples held in storage as low as possible by issuing samples to any research group with projects which are likely to provide meaningful results with a reasonable possibility of patient benefit in the future. We will consider applications from groups anywhere in the world which meet this criterion- both in the academic and commercial sectors.
