Research summary
The current study aims to investigate the quality of life of people with advanced dementia. As there is no known cure for dementia it is important to address how to promote and maintain quality of life, well-being and rights. The majority of the work in this area focuses on the early stages of the disease. Although important, it is critical not to neglect needs of those most vulnerable, in the later stages of dementia. Participants for this research will be recruited from two Fairways care homes (Glyn Menai and Ty Cariad) the main participants (residents) meeting the criteria on the Clincal Dementia Rating for advanced dementia. Further participants will include care staff at the homes and relatives (where possible).
As human lifespan is increasing dementia is becoming increasingly prevalent. Therefore, individuals living with the condition naturally develop into later stages which often requires care home placement. These residents are not merely service users but individuals with needs that should be being met. It is important to highlight how personalised care and rights can continue to be achieved when a person is completely dependent on others and may be unable to communicate their wishes verbally.
The duration of this research is expected to take place from January 2017 until October 2017, residents at the care homes will be observed in public areas of the homes without intrusion of day to day activities. Residents, care staff members and relatives who wish to take part will be interviewed at the care home.
