  • Research summary

This mixed methods feasibility study aims to explore the psychological impact of burn itch in children and their families using semi-structured interviews and a review of demographic and burn-itch data collected by healthcare staff and at the time of the interviews.
Burn itch or pruritus is a common occurrence in patients of all ages following a burn injury and arises during wound healing and scar maturation (Kuipers et al. 2015).The level of discomfort experienced has been described as greater than the pain from the injury and affects the psychological health of the patient and carers or family members due to disturbed sleep, difficulties in carrying out daily activities and distress caused by a persistent urge to scratch and consequent reopening of wounds (Van Ley et al. 2008; Carrougher et al. 2013).The data from the study will then be used in training of burn-care staff and in the development of a guidance in inpatient and outpatient settings.
