Research summary
Refugees can have many physical and mental health difficulties, such as trauma, homelessness, depression etc. Services are sometimes ill-equipped to deal with the difficulties that refugees might be experiencing, e.g. providing interpreters. This study aims to allow refugee children and adolescents to talk about their experiences of moving to Scotland and how services might better help them, so that they may not need as much long-term support.
Young people from Health and Social Care services will be invited to an hour long individual interview. Young people will be aged between 10-18 years old and identify with a refugee or asylum-seeker status. Questions in the interview will ask about their time in Scotland, effects of resettlement on their health and well-being, and how they feel about the services they are involved in e.g. 'what are the best/worst things about being Scotland?'
The opinions of the young person's family and professional care team will also be gathered to gain detailed information about the young person's support system. The family of the young person will be asked to take part in a hour-long group discussion about their time in Scotland and the support they have received. Professionals will be asked to take part in a focus group, talking about their experiences working with refugees, their concerns and potential unmet needs.
These interviews will be audio-recorded and transcribed before the researcher will look for common themes within the interviews. The findings will be shared with professional services and the refugee community. This will help to give people a voice and help to get support in the right areas, with the right people.REC name
