Research summary
Previous research has shown that the recording of perinatal mental ill health is poor and does not capture the true prevalence of mental health issues. This makes providing services to women difficult, and also means that research using mental health data is not fully accurate as we don't know about all mothers with mental ill health. We would like to complete qualitative interviews with mothers who have given birth in the last 12 months and who have consented, as a part of the BiBBS study) to be contacted about new research studies. We will also interview health visitors, GPs and midwives. Through this work we aim to identify the barriers and enablers to identifying / disclosing perinatal mental ill health, and capturing this information on the relevant routine data systems.
