Research summary
More women with HIV are living longer, which means many are now going through menopause. In the UK, the number of women aged 45 to 56 living with HIV has grown from about 3,300 in 2008 to 13,500 in 2021.
These women often face several challenges at the same time, such as violence, poverty, mental health issues, and other health problems. Many also experience menopause symptoms but don’t get enough support or treatment, like hormone replacement therapy (HRT). These symptoms can make it harder to manage their HIV, stay on treatment, and maintain good mental health and quality of life.
We’re working with the HIV charity Sophia Forum to improve our menopause service for women with HIV. We’re developing a face-to-face clinic run by both an HIV doctor and a trained peer support worker. The peer worker will offer one-on-one support, connect women with ongoing help, and refer them to other services. They’ll also join meetings with the clinic team to help shape the care provided.
To understand how well this service works, we’ll collect feedback from patients and staff, review clinic data, and conduct interviews and focus groups. We’ll use an evaluation framework called RE-AIM to look at how many people the service reaches, how well it works, and how it could be expanded in the future.
