  • Research summary

Most people in the UK are living with overweight or obesity which increases their risk of developing diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer. One way to help people manage their weight is to prevent them from gaining weight in the first place. Support to help people prevent weight gain could be offered within primary care settings.

During this study, GPs and/or nurses (we will refer to them as health care professionals [HCPs] throughout) will spend about 1 minute discussing weight gain prevention with eligible patients and offering them a chance to take part in the
SMART weight gain prevention programme. Eligible patients will be those are over the age of 18 and have a body mass index (BMI) between 23 and 29.9 kg/m².

We will ask how GPs and/or nurses feel about offering this weight gain prevention support to patients during their routine appointments and how the patients feel about being given this support. We will measure how many patients take part in the SMART programme, and of those who take part, how they feel about using it to prevent weight gain.

A Public and Patient Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) group, involving people from a range of different backgrounds and experiences, was set up to help develop this research study. We will share the findings of this study in academic journals and conferences and through public engagement activities (e.g., Pint of Science).
