Research summary
This project proposes to establish the prevalence of selected respiratory symptoms in a UK prison, the prevalence and severity of symptom diagnosed asthma, the prevalence and severity of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) confirmed by lung function tests, and to provide epidemiological data related to suspected ‘crack lung’. It will also compare current pharmacological management to evidence and guideline based management and identify the potential to improve provision. The prison population is suspected to be particularly at risk of respiratory disorders due to socioeconomic group and high risk behaviour, although limited UK data exists. This data has the potential to contribute to health care planning in the prison and community, to contribute towards achieving disease control (stability), enhancing health status and improving quality of life in the prison and community. The project is being partially funded by The Faculty of Health and Social Care at Edge Hill University and by the Research Investment Fund at Edge Hill University.
