Research summary
The number of people with diabetes is rising. One of the major causes of premature death in diabetes is heart failure. This is when the heart cannot pump blood effectively. It makes people feel tired, breathless and develop swollen limbs. It is associated with a high risk of dying. The prevalence and causes of heart failure in diabetes are uncertain. A key process may be build up of fat in the heart, stopping it from filling and pumping as it should. We will undertake a thorough assessment of heart structure and function, initially in 150 people with type 2 diabetes who have no signs of heart failure. All subjects will have an MRI, CT, ultrasound scan of the heart, exercise and blood tests. We will use medical records to see how many people in the study develop heart health problems over the next five years. We will perform the same tests in 50 people without diabetes, as a comparison. This will reveal how frequently and which abnormalities occur early on in the diabetic heart, and the best way of predicting them. It will help us understand diabetic heart disease and which aspects may be targeted with new treatments.
