Research summary
Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a condition that causes the blood vessels in the legs and feet to become narrowed. This can slow down how quickly blood can be pumped around the legs and feet. Some factors can make the condition worse, including smoking, a poor diet, being overweight and reduced activity levels. Symptoms can be a ‘cramp like’ pain in the back of the legs during walking and cold, purple coloured feet with thin and dry skin. Sometimes ulcers can also develop on the feet. Evidence suggests that appropriate foot care, weight loss, increased activity and stopping smoking can help to stop the condition from getting worse and ease symptoms. If high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels are detected, these will need medication from a GP.
We want to find out if a special assessment and advice service for people with PAD provided by a podiatrist can help relieve and improve symptoms associated with this condition. This will also involve linking with other colleagues who may be able to provide specific advice on diet, exercise, smoking and medication review. We also want to see if people who use this service think it has helped them.
Participants
Patients attending the Sheffield Podiatry Service who the podiatrists have identified have a reduced blood supply to their feet, will be asked if they wish to be referred to this special clinic and take part in this study. They will be given information to read about the study and if they wish to take part they will be given an appointment at the clinic for an assessment.REC name
