  • Research summary

    What is this research about?
The number of people living with multiple long-term conditions (MLTCs) is increasing. Within this group, some people are also vulnerable to sudden changes in health (known medically as ‘frailty’), reducing their ability to live an independent life. Physical activity helps maintain independence, but current programmes usually focus on one disease. In addition, only half of vulnerable people with MLTCs can stick to traditional physical activity programmes, and 9 in 10 cannot achieve government physical activity recommendations.

We have developed PERSONAL-AGILITY, a flexible approach which:
    • Uses all the ways we move in 24-hours to help people be active even if their health and symptoms are variable
    • Involves carers, benefiting their health too
    • Uses online tools, personalised videos and existing community support
This study aims to see if a bigger trial investigating the effectiveness of PERSONAL-AGILITY is acceptable and possible.

    Who can take part?
    • Adults living with MLTCs and frailty, one condition must be Type 2 Diabetes
    • A main, informal carer may also participate if they wish

What will they be asked to do?
Participants will be randomly assigned to PERSONAL-AGILITY or usual care. This will create two similar groups to compare. We will collect information on participation, retention, and program acceptability. These assessments will be collected at 12 and 24 weeks and measure:
    • Physical function
    • Quality of life
    • Ability to do everyday activities
    • Physical activity
    • Sleep
    • The emotional and physical work of caring
    • Muscle strength and size
What will we do with the results
    The results will help:
    • Make the running of the future trial more efficient
    • Improve PERSONAL-AGILITY
