Research summary
The PATTERN study is an observational study aiming to recruit adults with or without a diagnosis of major psychiatric disorder (e.g. major depressive disorder, schizophrenia) including patients with physical multimorbidity (1000 psychiatric and 200 non-psychiatric). In this study we aim to use two non-invasive devices (PPG stress flow www.biotekna.com/index.php/ppg-stress-flow/ and BIA-ACC www.biotekna.com/index.php/bia-acc/) to measure various physiological parameters in people with mental illness compared to people without a psychiatric diagnosis. We will evaluate any similarities or differences within the group across different mental health diagnoses, compared with controls. Our primary objective is to identify common features (a pattern of physiological parameters) of the PPG parameters and BIA-ACC in people with mental illness (with or without multimorbidity), using the PPG stress flow and the BIA-ACC® device. If identified we aim to use these patterns of physiological parameters to distinguish between mental health disorders. Our second objective is to identify a pattern of physiological parameters as measured by the devices that predict treatment response in the psychiatric group. Finally, we aim to investigate device feasibility in a psychiatric population and participant satisfaction with use.The current study will recruit over the period of two years. Each participant in the psychiatric group will be followed up for a maximum of six times within a year and the interval between visits will be 1-6 months ideally. Non-psychiatric participants will only be seen once with no further follow-up visits.A subsample of participants from the psychiatric group will be offered a qualitative semi-structured interview (maximum 30 minutes) to offer feedback at the end of their last follow-up.
