Research summary
Total Hip Replacement (THR) is a successful and cost-effective surgical intervention for end-stage OA; bringing pain relief and restoration of function. THR involves surgically replacing the hip joint with a prosthesis: a ball stem (into the thighbone) and cup socket (into the hip bone). It is a major physical, psychological and social undertaking for any patient. The diversity of patients undergoing THR possibly means different expectations of care and outcomes. Naturally patients vary in their needs and expectations: to develop clinical understanding of these issues further exploration of the patient viewpoint is required. This study will be one of the first to examine the experiences of THR from the perspective of the patient.
This qualitative study aims to explore the patient perspective through the hip replacement journey; the pre-operative decision-making process, post-operative recovery and unexpected complications. The end goal is to inform understanding about shared decision-making and the patient experience.REC name
